The Staedtler Pigment Liner is winning here, with 11 different nib sizes available. There are many elements to consider. Main difference being the Multiliner version is fully plastic and disposable while the Multiliner SP has refill tubes, changeable nibs, tool sets, etc. +/- Concentric grooves around pen chassis helps with grip, but may not be preferred by all I do have a single Copic Multiliner SP – which, if I’m honest, isn’t spectacular for its price. The lids on the Copic Multiliner SP pens have been problematic for me in the past, popping loose if you look at them the wrong way. Use triplus for sketching and mucking around, but don’t sell any works that use them, that would be a disaster. They are great for sketching, very fluid, easy to hold and come in a great variety of colours. The India ink is also what you’d expect—smudge-proof, acid-free, and water-resistant. All the fineliners resisted smudging quite well apart from the Stabilo Point 88 Fineliner. Best of all, this pen is really inexpensive. We would often use something, find it not suited to our liking and say “it sucks”. For this review I will be testing out these fineliners for blackness, smudging, bleeding, line work and smoothness. It really does feel nice on the paper as the ink is very smooth and flows effortlessly. + Nice, clean black ink when dry As you can see, by adding even more water, the pen ink just dissolved on the page. The fiber nibs on fine-liner pens, in my experience, don’t generally stand up to a lot of abuse. I haven’t seen refills for the colored Copic Multiliners, the colors I have are all part of their throw away line, so cheaper to buy but that said they don’t have a lot of colors though the colors they do have come in various tip sizes. The fineliner pens not only come in black but also sepia, light grey and dark grey, which is nice for a bit of variation. It gives you good precision, but you do have to be careful not to press too hard as it is very delicate. Pens That Surprised The Pentel Pointliner is thicker and the Winsor & Newton Fineliner seems much thinner. I repeated this after 10, 20 and 30 seconds to see how long the ink took to dry. Whilst I suppose it is natural to often reach for the favourite pen you use most, but this will depend on the type of drawing you do most. However the Rotring Tikky, Kuretakes, Sakura Micro and Copic Multi-liner all had glossy grip surfaces too and they gave the complete opposite experience. When selecting Microns, be sure to check you are getting the actual size in millimeters that you want.
